Lately, I've found myself completely captivated by the art of lapidary.
Long before gemstones were precision-cut by machines, artisans shaped each stone entirely by hand. Lapidary is the ancient craft of cutting, shaping, and polishing gemstones, a practice rooted in patience, skill, and a deep respect for the natural beauty of the material.
What draws me to this process is that it isn't about forcing a stone into a perfect, standardized shape. Instead, it's about discovering what already exists within it.
Every gemstone has its own personality. Its color, veining, inclusions, and structure guide the cutting process. The lapidary artist works with the stone rather than against it, revealing its character instead of hiding it. No two finished pieces are ever exactly alike, and that's precisely what makes them so special."
I've been especially drawn to lapis lazuli, a gemstone treasured since ancient civilizations. From Egyptian jewelry to Renaissance art, lapis has carried a rich history of beauty, symbolism, and craftsmanship. There's something timeless about its deep, celestial blue. Paired with high-carat gold, it creates a striking contrast that feels both ancient and undeniably modern.
Creating jewelry this way is intentionally slow.
